Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cetalkonium is a quaternary ammonium salt and a C16 alkyl benzalkonium chloride derivative used primarily as an antiseptic and preservative in pharmaceutical formulations. It acts as an antimicrobial agent with activity against a variety of bacteria and fungi by disrupting cell membranes, inactivating enzymes, and denaturing proteins. Cetalkonium is mainly used topically for the treatment of mouth ulcers, denture sores, teething pain, cold sores, cavity infections, and as an excipient in ophthalmic nanoemulsions to enhance drug delivery to ocular tissues. Its amphipathic property allows it to function as a surfactant and emulsifier in various products. Cetalkonium is approved for over-the-counter use by the FDA and Health Canada[1][2][3][4][5][7].
