Cetuximab + platinum-based doublet chemotherapy is a combination regimen used primarily for the treatment of recurrent or metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN). Cetuximab is a chimeric monoclonal antibody that targets the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), inhibiting its activation and downstream signaling pathways involved in tumor cell proliferation and survival. Platinum-based doublet chemotherapy typically refers to regimens combining a platinum compound (such as cisplatin or carboplatin) with another cytotoxic agent, most commonly fluorouracil (5-FU), but may also include agents like paclitaxel, docetaxel, pemetrexed, gemcitabine, vinorelbine, or etoposide depending on cancer type. The addition of cetuximab to this backbone has been shown to improve overall survival compared to chemotherapy alone in first-line treatment for recurrent/metastatic SCCHN[1][2][6].
