Cetuximab-IRDye800 is a near-infrared (NIR) fluorescently labeled monoclonal antibody developed as an optical imaging agent for intraoperative surgical navigation. It consists of the chimeric IgG1 monoclonal antibody cetuximab, which targets the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), covalently conjugated to the NIR dye IRDye800CW. EGFR is overexpressed in over 90% of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC). When administered intravenously prior to surgery, the agent binds to EGFR-expressing tumor cells, allowing real-time visualization of tumor margins and metastatic lymph nodes using specialized NIR imaging systems. This molecular imaging approach aims to improve the precision of surgical resection and cancer staging by differentiating malignant tissue from normal surrounding structures.
