Cetylpyridinium chloride + zinc lactate + sodium fluoride is an alcohol-free antimicrobial mouthwash formulation developed by Colgate-Palmolive for the treatment and prevention of dental plaque and gingivitis. The combination leverages the synergistic effects of cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), a quaternary ammonium antimicrobial that disrupts bacterial cell membranes, and zinc lactate, which enhances anti-plaque efficacy by inhibiting bacterial metabolism and volatile sulfur compound production within biofilms. Sodium fluoride is included to provide anti-caries benefits through enamel remineralization and the formation of fluorapatite. Clinical studies, including Phase 3 trials, have demonstrated that this triple-action formulation provides superior efficacy in reducing gingival inflammation and established plaque scores compared to CPC-only or fluoride-only mouthwashes over treatment periods ranging from six weeks to three months.
