Overview

The combination of cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) and xylitol is used primarily in oral healthcare products, particularly mouthwashes. This combination leverages the antimicrobial properties of CPC with the dental benefits of xylitol to create effective products for oral hygiene. CPC is a quaternary ammonium compound with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. It works by disrupting bacterial membrane integrity, causing leakage of bacterial cytoplasmic components, interfering with cellular metabolism, inhibiting cell growth, and ultimately leading to cell death. Additionally, CPC can inhibit the synthesis of insoluble glucan by streptococcal glucosyltransferase, adsorb to pellicle-covered enamel, inhibit co-adhesion of bacteria, and bind to streptococcus mutans biofilms. Xylitol is a sugar alcohol that has shown effectiveness in preventing dental caries. It has inhibitory effects on the growth of periodontopathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis, which is responsible for the initiation and progression of periodontitis. Xylitol works by reducing inflammatory cytokine expression. Clinical studies have shown that CPC-based mouthwashes supplemented with sodium fluoride and xylitol (10%) are highly active against important oral pathogens. These mouthwashes have demonstrated high antimicrobial activity, bactericidal properties against planktonic and biofilm cultures of S. mutans, S. sobrinus, and P. gingivalis, better biocompatibility compared to chlorhexidine-containing mouthwashes, and anti-inflammatory properties by decreasing the secretion of interleukin-6 and interleukin-8. The combination is particularly effective for preventing plaque and gingivitis, providing relief for dry mouth symptoms, remineralizing tooth enamel, and fighting oral pathogens associated with dental caries, periodontal disease, and candidiasis.
