Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cetylpyridinium chloride mouthwash is an antiseptic oral rinse that contains cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) as its active ingredient. It's commonly used to reduce plaque and gingivitis, acting as both an antigingivitis and antiplaque agent. ## Mechanism of Action Cetylpyridinium chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound that works as a cationic surfactant with broad-spectrum antibacterial properties. Its mechanism involves: 1. Initial interaction with bacterial cell membranes by substituting magnesium and calcium ions with its positively charged pyridine ion 2. Integration of its hexadecane tail into the lipid membrane, causing disorganization 3. At low concentrations, it interferes with bacterial osmoregulation and homeostasis 4. At high concentrations, it leads to complete disintegration of cell membranes with subsequent leakage of cytoplasmic contents[9] This action effectively disrupts bacterial membrane integrity, causing leakage of bacterial components, interfering with cellular metabolism, inhibiting cell growth, and ultimately leading to cell death[5]. ## Usage These mouthwashes are primarily used to: - Help control plaque that leads to gingivitis - Reduce existing dental plaque - Diminish the growth of pathogenic bacteria - Inhibit the production of virulence factors[5]
