Cetylpyridinium iodide is a quaternary ammonium compound that serves as an antiseptic and antimicrobial agent. It is a cationic surfactant that works by binding to the negatively charged surfaces of microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi, leading to the disruption of their cell membranes and subsequent cell death. In the clinical setting, it is being developed by Beijing Renfu Junwei Pharmaceutical Technology Development as a lozenge formulation (specifically as a "compound cetylpyridinium iodide lozenge") for the treatment of mild recurrent aphthous ulcers (canker sores). A Phase IIb clinical trial (CTR20242585) has been conducted in China to evaluate its efficacy in providing pain relief and promoting ulcer healing compared to placebo and active controls.
