Overview

Cetyltrimethylammonium naproxenate is a defined 1:1 salt of the quaternary-ammonium antiseptic **cetrimonium** and the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug **naproxen**. It has been marketed in Italy as **Nitens** in 0.223% local oral formulations, including mouthwash and oral-mucosal spray, for symptomatic inflammatory and painful conditions of the oral cavity and pharynx such as gingivitis, stomatitis, and pharyngitis, including after dental procedures. The naproxenate component provides local cyclooxygenase-mediated anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity, while the cetrimonium component has surfactant-mediated antiseptic activity. Published in-vitro studies reported rapid bactericidal activity against multiple oral and pharyngeal microorganisms and reduced adherence of selected bacterial-vaginosis-associated organisms to vaginal epithelial cells.
