Overview

Cevimeline is a synthetic small molecule muscarinic cholinergic agonist, primarily used for the symptomatic treatment of dry mouth (xerostomia) in patients with Sjögren's syndrome. It acts as an agonist at muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, with particular selectivity for the M1 and M3 subtypes. By activating these receptors on exocrine glands such as salivary and sweat glands, cevimeline increases glandular secretions—most notably saliva—thereby alleviating symptoms of dry mouth. The drug is administered orally and is available by prescription only[1][2][3][7].
