Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cevoglitazar (LBM642) is an orally active, non-adipose targeted dual peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha and gamma (PPARα/γ) agonist originally developed by Novartis for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and obesity. Unlike traditional PPARγ agonists (such as thiazolidinediones) which often cause significant weight gain and edema due to activation of PPARγ in adipose tissue, cevoglitazar has poor exposure to adipose tissue, thereby avoiding these common side effects. In preclinical models, it has demonstrated potent efficacy in reducing food intake, body weight, and fasting plasma insulin, as well as improving glucose tolerance and lipid metabolism. Novartis terminated the clinical development of cevoglitazar in 2008.
