CF-296 is an engineered antistaphylococcal lysin being developed by ContraFect as a direct lytic agent for the treatment of methicillin-sensitive and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA and MRSA) infections, intended for use in combination with standard-of-care antibiotics. It is a protein derived from and optimized relative to the lysin exebacase, designed to cleave the S. aureus cell wall, rapidly killing bacteria, reducing biofilms, and exhibiting a low propensity for resistance development, with preclinical studies demonstrating potent in vivo activity, particularly when combined with daptomycin, in models of biofilm-associated and implant-related osteomyelitis infections.[2][5][7][9][10]
