The primary version is a synthetic, orally bioavailable small molecule that acts as a highly potent and selective agonist of the A3 adenosine receptor (A3AR), also known as MRS3558. Developed by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and licensed by Can-Fite BioPharma, this compound belongs to the (N)-methanocarba nucleoside class and has been studied for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of the PI3K, PKB/Akt, and NF-κB signaling pathways, leading to anti-inflammatory effects. More recently, the name CF502 has also been used by commercial chemical suppliers to describe a non-nucleotide agonist of the STING (Stimulator of Interferon Genes) pathway, which has demonstrated activity against SARS-CoV strains.
