Overview

CG8711 is a genetically modified, allogeneic prostate cancer cell line derived from LNCaP cells, engineered to stably express and secrete human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF). It serves as one of two cellular components of the GVAX immunotherapy for prostate cancer, the other being the CG1940 cell line. The cells are irradiated to arrest proliferation while maintaining metabolic activity and are administered intradermally. The secreted GM-CSF acts as an immune stimulant, recruiting and activating dendritic cells to process and present prostate cancer antigens found on the irradiated cells, thereby eliciting a systemic anti-tumor T-cell response. Developed by Cell Genesys, CG8711 was evaluated in the Phase III VITAL-1 trial for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC), but the program was terminated in 2008 after a futility analysis indicated the trial was unlikely to meet its primary endpoint of overall survival.
