ChAdOx1 MERS is a viral vector vaccine candidate developed to protect against Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV). It uses the replication-deficient simian adenovirus vector ChAdOx1 to deliver the gene encoding the full-length spike (S) protein of MERS-CoV. The vaccine induces both humoral and cellular immune responses, generating neutralizing antibodies and T cell responses targeting the S protein. Preclinical studies in mice, non-human primates, and camels demonstrated robust immunogenicity and protection against multiple strains of MERS-CoV. Phase 1 clinical trials in healthy adults have shown that the vaccine is well tolerated with mostly mild or moderate adverse events and elicits strong antibody and T cell responses. The development is led by researchers at the University of Oxford’s Jenner Institute/Pandemic Sciences Institute in collaboration with Vaccitech plc; commercial rights are held by Vaccitech[1][3][4][5][6][7].
