Overview

ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 is a viral vector vaccine developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca against COVID-19. It utilizes a modified, replication-deficient chimpanzee adenovirus (ChAdOx1) to deliver the genetic code for the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. This instructs host cells to produce the spike protein, thereby triggering an immune response and immunological memory. Administered as two intramuscular doses (0.5 mL each) typically 8-12 weeks apart, it is intended for adults aged 18 years and older. Clinical trials showed varying efficacy rates depending on dosing, with an overall efficacy of 63.1% or 70.4% in pooled analyses. The vaccine is authorized for use worldwide under various brand names including Vaxzevria and COVISHIELD.
