Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Chaenomeles fructus** refers to the dried mature fruit of *Chaenomeles speciosa* (Sweet) Nakai, a plant in the Rosaceae family, used extensively in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It contains a diverse array of phytochemicals, including triterpenoid acids (oleanolic acid, ursolic acid, betulinic acid), flavonoids (quercetin, rutin, hyperoside), phenolic and phenylpropionic acids (protocatechuic acid, gallic acid, chlorogenic acid), saccharides, essential oils, and alkaloids[1][3][4]. In TCM, chaenomeles fructus is prescribed for musculoskeletal conditions (joint and muscle disorders, cramping, paralysis, rheumatism), digestive issues (indigestion, abdominal pain), various inflammatory syndromes, and vitamin C deficiency[1][2][4][5]. Modern pharmacological studies indicate anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressive, anti-nociceptive, hepatoprotective, antitumor, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antihyperlipidemic, antihyperglycemic, and antiparkinsonian effects[1][3][4]. Mechanistic studies in animal models suggest its effects are mediated via inhibition of arachidonic acid metabolism and MAPK signaling pathway, supporting its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory actions in diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis[4].
