Overview

Chai Hu Gui Zhi Gan Jiang Tang is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine formula originating from the Eastern Han Dynasty's Treatise on Cold Damage and Miscellaneous Diseases. It is a multi-herb decoction composed of Bupleurum chinense root, Cinnamomum twig, Zingiber officinale rhizome, Scutellaria baicalensis root, Trichosanthes root, Concha Ostreae, and Glycyrrhiza. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is primarily used to treat Shaoyang disorders characterized by fluid retention. Modern clinical research has explored its efficacy in treating chronic non-atrophic gastritis, postcholecystectomy diarrhea, and menopausal symptoms such as insomnia and depression. Pharmacological studies suggest it may modulate inflammatory markers like interleukin-6 (IL-6). It is included in the Japanese national pharmacopeia under the name Saiko-keishi-kankyo-to.
