Overview
Chaigui Granules is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formulation developed by the Modern Research Center for Traditional Chinese Medicine at Shanxi University for the treatment of mild to moderate depression. The drug is a refined granule composed primarily of extracts from *Bupleurum chinense* (Chaihu) and *Angelica sinensis* (Danggui), targeting the liver-qi stagnation and blood deficiency patterns in TCM theory. Pharmacological studies indicate that Chaigui Granules exerts its antidepressant effects through multiple pathways, including the modulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, enhancement of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression in the hippocampus, and regulation of monoamine neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. It has progressed into Phase III clinical development in China, demonstrating a favorable safety profile and significant efficacy in reducing depressive symptoms compared to placebo.
