Chaihu plus Longgu Muli decoction (also known as Chaihu jia longgu muli tang) is a classic Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula originally documented in the *Shanghan Lun* (Treatise on Febrile Diseases). It is a complex multi-herb decoction typically comprising *Radix Bupleuri* (Chaihu), *Radix Scutellariae* (Huangqin), *Rhizoma Pinelliae* (Banxia), *Cinnamomi Ramulus* (Guizhi), *Poria* (Fuling), *Radix Codonopsis* (Dangshen), *Radix et Rhizoma Rhei* (Dahuang), *Os Draconis* (Longgu), *Concha Ostreae* (Muli), *Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens* (Shengjiang), and *Fructus Ziziphi Jujubae* (Dazao). The formula is traditionally indicated for "Shaoyang" syndrome characterized by fullness in the chest, irritability, palpitations, and delirium. In modern clinical research, it is being investigated by institutions like Hunan Brain Hospital for the treatment of schizophrenia, particularly to evaluate its impact on metabolomic profiles and molecular targets such as the mTOR signaling pathway, estrogen receptor 1 (ESR1), and SMAD4. It is often studied as an adjunctive therapy to standard antipsychotics like olanzapine to improve therapeutic outcomes or mitigate metabolic side effects.
