Overview

Chaihu Xuanfuhua Decoction is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formula utilized by the Wangjing Hospital of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences for the treatment of Hashimoto's thyroiditis and associated hypothyroidism. Based on the therapeutic principles of soothing the liver and resolving phlegm, the formula is designed to address the liver-qi stagnation and phlegm-coagulation patterns frequently observed in autoimmune thyroid disorders. Pharmacologically, it aims to modulate the immune response by reducing the levels of thyroid autoantibodies, specifically anti-thyroid peroxidase (TPOAb) and anti-thyroglobulin (TgAb), while supporting the restoration of normal thyroid hormone levels. The formula is typically administered as an oral decoction and is often used as a primary or adjunctive therapy in clinical settings in China to alleviate symptoms of hypothyroidism and reduce thyroid inflammation.
