Overview

Chaihushugan Decoction (also known as Chaihu Shugan San) is a classic Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formula traditionally used to soothe the liver and regulate Qi. It typically consists of seven herbs: *Bupleurum chinense* (Chai Hu), *Citrus reticulata* (Chen Pi), *Ligusticum chuanxiong* (Chuan Xiong), *Cyperus rotundus* (Xiang Fu), *Citrus aurantium* (Zhi Ke), *Paeonia lactiflora* (Shao Yao), and *Glycyrrhiza uralensis* (Gan Cao). In modern clinical research, it is being evaluated for its effectiveness in treating sleep disorders, specifically chronic insomnia, as well as depression and gastrointestinal issues. The formula is thought to exert its effects through the modulation of neurotransmitters such as GABA and serotonin, as well as the regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.
