Overview

Chamaecyparis obtusa, commonly known as the Hinoki or Japanese cypress, is an evergreen tree native to Japan. [11] While specific research often focuses on extracts from parts like the leaves, wood, or essential oil, the whole plant contains a complex mixture of bioactive compounds. [1, 3, 4] These components, primarily terpenes (such as α-pinene, sabinene, limonene), terpenoids (like hinokitiol), and flavonoids (including quercitrin and myricetin), are responsible for its recognized therapeutic properties. [4, 6, 7] The plant is widely known for its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and aromatic effects. [3, 4] In traditional and modern applications, it is used in skincare for soothing irritation and acne, in aromatherapy for stress reduction, and has been investigated for a range of other potential health benefits including anticancer and antiallergic activities.
