Overview

Chamaemelum nobile, widely known as Roman chamomile, is a perennial flowering herb in the Asteraceae family. It is a prominent medicinal plant historically utilized in traditional medicine for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and sedative properties. The plant's chemical profile is characterized by a high concentration of essential oils, including angelic acid esters (such as 3-methylpentyl angelate), as well as flavonoids (notably apigenin), coumarins, and germacrane-type sesquiterpene lactones like nobilin. Pharmacological research indicates that C. nobile can inhibit key pro-inflammatory mediators such as Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Tumor Necrosis Factor alpha (TNF-α), and Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein-1 (MCP-1). It also demonstrates inhibitory activity against enzymes such as acetylcholinesterase and tyrosinase, suggesting potential applications in neurodegenerative and skin disorders. Clinically, it has been investigated as a 2% topical gel for managing Oral Lichen Planus (OLP) as a safer alternative to corticosteroids.
