Chamazulene is an aromatic small molecule (C14H16) found in various plants such as chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla), wormwood (Artemisia absinthium), and yarrow (Achillea millefolium)[3][1]. It is a blue-violet derivative of azulene biosynthesized from the sesquiterpene matricin[3]. Chamazulene is a constituent of essential oils obtained from these plants and is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties[4][5]. Its mechanism of action includes inhibition of Leukotriene A4 hydrolase formation in neutrophils, likely through inhibition of lipid peroxidation and radical processes[5][4]. Chamazulene also inhibits Cyclooxygenase-2 but not Cyclooxygenase-1, contributing to its anti-inflammatory effects[6]. It has been shown to inhibit the Cytochrome P450 1A2 enzyme in vitro[3].
