Overview

Chamomile extract is a preparation derived from the flowers of plants in the Asteraceae family—primarily Matricaria recutita (German or true camomille) and Chamaemelum nobile (Roman camomille). It has been used for centuries as a traditional herbal remedy. Chamomile extract contains active compounds such as flavonoids (notably apigenin and luteolin), coumarins and essential oils like bisabolol. These constituents are believed to contribute to its pharmacological effects. Chamomile extract is used orally for gastrointestinal complaints including flatulence (gas), inflammatory disorders of the GI tract and spasms; it is also used for insomnia and anxiety. Topically or by inhalation it is applied for skin inflammation or mucous membrane irritation. There is some evidence supporting modest anxiolytic (antianxiety) activity in mild-to-moderate anxiety disorders[8]. Other reported activities include anti-inflammatory[5], antioxidant[5], antispasmodic[4], antidepressant[8], neuroprotective[5] and possible benefits in glycemic control in type 2 diabetes[4][5]. The mechanism of action involves modulation of neurotransmitter systems via flavonoids such as apigenin binding to benzodiazepine receptors; anti-inflammatory effects are attributed to inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis by bisabolol constituents. Clinical trial evidence remains limited overall; most uses are based on traditional practice rather than robust clinical data.
