Overview

*Chamomilla recutita*, commonly known as German chamomile, is a plant used extensively in traditional and modern herbal medicine for its various therapeutic properties. [16, 26] It is recognized for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, analgesic, anxiolytic, and antimicrobial effects. [10, 19, 25] Its mechanism of action is multifactorial, stemming from a rich composition of phytochemicals including flavonoids (like apigenin and quercetin), terpenoids (like α-bisabolol and chamazulene), and coumarins. [16, 23, 25, 27] These compounds contribute to its therapeutic effects by modulating various biological pathways. For instance, apigenin has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anxiolytic properties, partly by binding to benzodiazepine receptors, while α-bisabolol and chamazulene are known for their anti-inflammatory and skin-soothing actions. [3, 4, 6] Clinically, *Chamomilla recutita* has been investigated for a range of conditions, including mucositis, phlebitis, recurrent aphthous stomatitis, skin inflammation like radiodermatitis and eczema, xerostomia, and post-operative flatulence. [1, 2, 3, 4, 18, 19] It is available in various formulations such as infusions, extracts, topical creams, and oral sprays. [1, 3, 4, 10, 11] While generally considered safe, it can cause allergic reactions in individuals sensitive to the Asteraceae family of plants. [10, 17]
