Overview

Changfukang is a probiotic pharmaceutical preparation containing live *Bacillus cereus* spores, primarily utilized for the treatment of intestinal dysfunction such as enteritis and various forms of diarrhea. Developed and manufactured by Jiangsu Aidea Pharmaceutical, it is an established therapeutic in China for both adult and infantile diarrheal conditions. The mechanism of action involves the bacterium acting as a facultative anaerobe; upon ingestion, it consumes residual oxygen in the gastrointestinal tract to create an anaerobic environment. This selectively promotes the proliferation of beneficial anaerobic microflora, such as *Bifidobacterium* and *Lactobacillus*, while inhibiting the growth of pathogenic aerobic and facultative anaerobic bacteria. Additionally, the preparation facilitates the secretion of digestive enzymes and B-vitamins, contributing to the restoration of normal physiological intestinal function. In the field of oncology, Changfukang has been investigated in phase II clinical trials as a prophylactic intervention to mitigate diarrhea associated with the EGFR inhibitor afatinib in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), although these specific studies were eventually terminated.
