Changtong Oral Liquid

Changtong Oral Liquid is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formulation developed by the Nanfang Hospital of Southern Medical University (formerly the First Military Medical University). It is primarily utilized in the postoperative management of patients undergoing abdominal surgery, particularly for rectal malignant tumors, to prevent the formation of postoperative peritoneal adhesions and intestinal obstruction. The preparation is based on classical purgative formulas and typically contains herbal ingredients such as *Rheum palmatum*, *Magnolia officinalis*, *Aurantii Fructus Immaturus*, and *Mirabilite*. Its therapeutic effects are attributed to the stimulation of gastrointestinal motility and the inhibition of inflammatory pathways. Specifically, it has been shown to downregulate the expression of pro-fibrotic and pro-inflammatory factors such as TGF-beta1, TNF-alpha, and IL-6, thereby reducing the fibroblastic activity that leads to adhesions. It is commonly administered orally or via a gastric tube in the early postoperative phase to facilitate the recovery of bowel function.
