Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Changyanning is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formulation widely used in China for the treatment of various gastrointestinal disorders. The preparation is typically composed of five herbal ingredients: Brocade herb (*Euphorbia humifusa*), *Hedyotis flavescens*, Camphor roots, Chinese elsholtzia, and Maple leaves. It is indicated for acute and chronic gastroenteritis, diarrhea, bacterial dysentery, and pediatric dyspepsia. Mechanistically, Changyanning exhibits anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties; it has been shown to reduce the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, decrease myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, and enhance intestinal epithelial barrier function by upregulating tight junction proteins like occludin and ZO-1. Clinical research has expanded its application to include diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D), functional diarrhea, and the management of symptoms following endoscopic resection of colorectal polyps.
