Channa striatus extract, also known as Haruan extract, is a natural product derived from the freshwater snakehead fish *Channa striatus*, which is traditionally valued in Malaysia for its medicinal properties. It is being developed as a nutraceutical supplement by Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) for the treatment of primary knee osteoarthritis. The extract contains a complex profile of bioactive components, including essential amino acids (such as glycine and glutamic acid) and fatty acids (such as arachidonic acid), which are believed to confer anti-inflammatory and chondroprotective effects. Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of inflammatory mediators like cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), as well as the maintenance of cartilage structural integrity, often monitored via serum cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) levels. Clinical research has evaluated the extract in oral capsule form, demonstrating potential efficacy in reducing pain and improving joint function in osteoarthritis patients compared to standard treatments like glucosamine sulphate.
