Overview
Chanqin Granule is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formulation developed by Shuguang Hospital, affiliated with the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, for the treatment of cough hypersensitivity syndrome (CHS). The preparation is composed of several herbal ingredients, most notably *Cicadae Periostracum* (Chan Tui) and *Scutellariae Radix* (Huang Qin). It is designed to alleviate persistent cough by reducing airway hyperresponsiveness and suppressing the heightened cough reflex sensitivity. Pharmacological studies indicate that Chanqin Granule modulates neurogenic inflammation and inhibits the activation of sensory nerve pathways, specifically targeting transient receptor potential (TRP) channels such as TRPV1 and TRPA1. It also demonstrates anti-inflammatory properties by reducing the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines like IL-4 and IL-5. The drug is typically administered orally as a granule and is currently being evaluated in clinical trials to establish its efficacy in patients with chronic cough conditions.
