Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Charred schizonepeta spike (Schizonepetae Spica Carbonisata) is a traditional Chinese medicine prepared by stir-frying the dried spikes of *Schizonepeta tenuifolia* Briq. until they are carbonized (black on the outside and charred on the inside). While raw Schizonepeta spikes are traditionally used to treat common colds, fevers, and headaches, the carbonization process alters the chemical profile of the herb, enhancing its hemostatic properties. It is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat various hemorrhagic conditions, such as hematochezia (bloody stool), metrorrhagia (uterine bleeding), and hematuria. Research suggests that its hemostatic activity may be mediated by carbon dots generated during the charring process, which can elevate platelet counts and promote coagulation.
