CharXgen

CharXgen is an oral adsorbent composed of activated bamboo charcoal encapsulated in sodium alginate microspheres. It is developed for the treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD) to retard the deterioration of kidney function. The mechanism involves the physical adsorption of protein-bound uremic toxins, specifically indoxyl sulfate (IS) and p-cresyl sulfate (PCS), within the gastrointestinal tract. By preventing the systemic absorption of these toxins, CharXgen reduces oxidative stress and inflammation associated with CKD progression and helps lower levels of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23). In preclinical studies, it has demonstrated efficacy comparable to or exceeding that of existing carbonaceous adsorbents like AST-120.
