Overview

Chelated zinc is a form of dietary supplement in which the mineral zinc is bound to a chelating agent—typically an amino acid or organic acid—to enhance its absorption and bioavailability in the body. Common forms include combinations with aspartic acid (zinc aspartate), methionine (zinc methionine), monomethionine (zinc monomethionine), acetic acid (zinc acetate), citric acid (zinc citrate), gluconic acid (zinc gluconate), orotic acid (zinc orotate), and picolinic acid (zinc picolinate)[1][4]. Zinc is an essential micronutrient involved in numerous biological processes including immune function, protein synthesis, DNA synthesis and repair, wound healing, and cellular signaling[1][3][4]. Chelated forms are designed for improved gastrointestinal absorption compared to inorganic salts. The mechanism of action of supplemental chelated zinc is to provide bioavailable elemental zinc for use as a cofactor in over 3000 human proteins including enzymes and transcription factors[3]. It supports immune defense by promoting resistance to epithelial apoptosis and modulating inflammatory pathways such as NF-kappaB activation[3].
