Drug intelligence / Profile preview
CHELATEXX is an oral adsorbent therapy developed by Chelatexx for the treatment and prevention of hyperammonemia-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease. The active ingredient is 360 mg of USP activated charcoal, formulated in an enteric-coated capsule designed to bypass the stomach and release in the distal ileum. This targeted delivery allows the charcoal to reach the colon approximately three hours after a meal, where it acts by physically adsorbing neurotoxic ammonia at its primary site of production. By binding ammonia in the gut, CHELATEXX prevents its absorption into the systemic circulation, thereby reducing the neurotoxic burden on the brain. The therapy is currently in preclinical development, with plans for Phase 2/3 clinical trials to evaluate its efficacy in slowing progressive cognitive decline.
