Overview

This is a combination therapy consisting of chemotherapy (a class of cytotoxic drugs used to treat cancer by killing or inhibiting the growth of rapidly dividing cells) and filgrastim, a recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF). Chemotherapy is commonly associated with myelosuppression, leading to neutropenia—a dangerous reduction in white blood cells that increases infection risk. Filgrastim acts as a hematopoietic growth factor, stimulating the bone marrow to produce more neutrophils and thereby reducing the incidence, severity, and duration of neutropenia and febrile neutropenia in patients receiving myelosuppressive chemotherapy. This combination is widely used in oncology for patients with nonmyeloid malignancies undergoing cytotoxic chemotherapy[1][2][3][4][5].
