Overview

**chenodeoxycholic acid + ursodeoxycholic acid** is a combination of two bile acids used primarily for the medical treatment of cholesterol gallstones. This combination reduces the cholesterol saturation of bile more effectively than either component alone, facilitating the gradual dissolution of cholesterol-rich gallstones and reducing the risk of gallstone formation. The mechanism of action involves decreasing intestinal absorption of cholesterol and reducing hepatic secretion of cholesterol into bile, thereby altering the bile composition and enhancing bile flow. Both agents modulate the bile acid pool and promote the dissolution of cholesterol in bile. This combination is generally well-tolerated, with fewer side effects than chenodeoxycholic acid alone and more cost-effective than ursodeoxycholic acid monotherapy[1][3][6].
