Overview

Chenopodium album allergen extract is derived from the pollen of the *Chenopodium album* plant, commonly known as lamb's quarters or goosefoot. [12] This extract is a biological drug used for both the diagnosis and treatment (allergen immunotherapy) of Type I hypersensitivity allergic reactions, such as allergic rhinitis and asthma, in individuals sensitive to this pollen. [3, 4, 5] For diagnostic purposes, it is administered as a skin prick test; a positive reaction, indicated by a wheal and flare, confirms sensitivity. [2, 5] For therapeutic use, it is given as a series of injections with gradually increasing doses to induce immunological tolerance and reduce the severity of allergy symptoms. [4, 10] The mechanism of action involves the interaction of allergenic proteins in the extract (e.g., Che a 1, Che a 2, Che a 3) with the patient's immune system. [2] In diagnosis, these allergens cross-link IgE antibodies on mast cells, leading to histamine release and a localized allergic reaction. [3] In immunotherapy, the process is thought to modulate the immune response, shifting it from a Th2-dominant (allergic) to a Th1-dominant (tolerant) profile. [4] Several companies, including LETI Pharma, Stallergenes Greer, and ALK-Abello, manufacture and supply this extract. [5, 7, 10]
