Overview

CHF 5259 is an investigational extrafine pressurized metered-dose inhaler (pMDI) formulation of glycopyrrolate bromide (also known as glycopyrronium bromide) developed by Chiesi Farmaceutici S.p.A. specifically for the treatment of asthma. As a long-acting muscarinic receptor antagonist (LAMA), it works by competitively blocking muscarinic M3 receptors in the bronchial smooth muscles, which prevents acetylcholine-induced bronchoconstriction and results in sustained bronchodilation. The drug has been evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials, such as the ELITRA and TRISKEL studies, as an add-on therapy to inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) and long-acting beta2-agonists (LABA) for patients whose asthma symptoms remain poorly controlled on standard maintenance therapies.
