CHF6795 is an orally bioavailable small molecule P2X3 receptor antagonist being developed by Chiesi Farmaceutici for the treatment of refractory or unexplained chronic cough. P2X3 receptors are ATP-gated ion channels found on peripheral sensory neurons, including the vagal C-fibers that innervate the airways. Activation of these receptors by extracellular ATP, which is often released during airway inflammation or irritation, triggers the cough reflex. By selectively inhibiting P2X3 receptors, CHF6795 aims to reduce the hypersensitivity of the cough reflex and decrease cough frequency. The candidate has been evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials to assess its efficacy, safety, and tolerability profile in patients whose cough has not responded to treatment of underlying conditions.
