Overview

Chia seeds (*Salvia hispanica* L.) are a nutrient-dense botanical product used as a functional food and dietary supplement for the management of metabolic and inflammatory conditions. Rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), dietary fiber, and antioxidants, chia seeds—particularly the Salba strain—have been clinically evaluated for their efficacy in promoting weight loss and reducing visceral obesity in patients with type 2 diabetes. The mechanism of action involves the high fiber content, which enhances satiety and slows glucose absorption, alongside the anti-inflammatory properties of ALA, which lead to significant reductions in C-reactive protein (CRP) and pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-alpha. Clinical trials have also demonstrated their ability to modulate satiety-related hormones, including increasing adiponectin and decreasing ghrelin levels, thereby supporting long-term weight management and cardiovascular health.
