Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Chickpea oil is a natural product derived from *Cicer arietinum L.*, commonly known as chickpea. It has been traditionally used in Persian Medicine for treating joint pains and is recognized for its anti-inflammatory properties. The oil contains various beneficial components including mineral elements (e.g., calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus), vitamins (e.g., thiamine, niacin), and unsaturated fatty acids (e.g., oleic acid, linoleic acid). A randomized double-blind controlled clinical trial demonstrated that topical application of chickpea oil was effective in relieving pain, reducing motion stiffness, and increasing activity in patients with knee osteoarthritis, showing comparable efficacy to piroxicam gel and superior results to placebo. The specific formulation used in the trial involved mixing chickpea extract with sesame oil.
