Overview

Chicory (Cichorium intybus) is a perennial herb whose roots and leaves have been used traditionally for various medicinal purposes. The roasted root is commonly brewed as a coffee substitute or additive. Medicinally, chicory has been used to treat gastrointestinal disorders such as dyspepsia and constipation and is recognized for its use as an appetite stimulant. Chicory-derived inulin acts as a prebiotic fiber that resists digestion in the small intestine but is fermented by colonic bacteria, promoting beneficial changes in gut microbiota (notably increasing Bifidobacteria). Other traditional uses include its role as a heart tonic, liver tonic, diuretic, anti-inflammatory agent, and for relief of mild digestive disorders and temporary loss of appetite. Some studies suggest potential antidiabetic effects and possible benefits on mood and cognition; however robust clinical evidence supporting these uses remains limited[1][2][4]. Chicory extracts are also being investigated for their potential anticancer properties[6].
