chicory root extract

Chicory root extract is a botanical drug candidate developed by Phytomedics Inc. for the treatment of osteoarthritis. Derived from the roots of *Cichorium intybus*, this specific hydrocarbon extract contains bioactive compounds, primarily sesquiterpene lactones, which are believed to possess significant anti-inflammatory properties. The drug's mechanism of action involves the inhibition of pro-inflammatory mediators and enzymes, such as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and various cytokines, which contribute to joint inflammation and pain. A Phase 1 clinical trial (NCT00247156) was conducted to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and preliminary efficacy of escalating doses of the extract in patients over 50 years of age with osteoarthritis of the hip or knee. Although the Phase 1 results showed a trend toward symptomatic improvement, no further clinical development has been reported, and the product is considered discontinued.
