Chigan is a botanical drug candidate developed by Peking University Shijia Technology Development Co., Ltd. for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is derived from the total saponins of *Gynostemma pentaphyllum* (Jiaogulan), a plant widely used in traditional Chinese medicine. The drug's primary mechanism of action involves the activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), a master regulator of cellular energy metabolism. Activation of AMPK leads to increased glucose transporter translocation to the cell membrane, enhancing glucose uptake in skeletal muscle, and simultaneously suppresses the expression of gluconeogenic enzymes in the liver. Chigan has completed Phase 2 and entered Phase 3 clinical trials in China, demonstrating potential as a novel therapy for glycemic control.
