CHILD-IVITAB is a pediatric-specific formulation of ivermectin developed by the University of Oxford for the treatment of scabies and other neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in infants and young children. It is designed as oro-dispersible minitablets to facilitate administration in children weighing 5 to less than 15 kg, a population for which oral ivermectin is not currently widely indicated. Ivermectin acts by binding selectively and with high affinity to glutamate-gated chloride ion channels in invertebrate nerve and muscle cells. This binding leads to an increase in the permeability of the cell membrane to chloride ions with hyperpolarization of the nerve or muscle cell, resulting in paralysis and death of the parasite. The EPIC-15 trial is evaluating its safety, pharmacokinetics, and efficacy in this specific weight group.
