Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Chinese olive (*Canarium album*) is a botanical product derived from the fruit of the *Canarium album* tree, widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for its heat-clearing and fluid-promoting properties. In clinical research led by the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine, it is being investigated as a natural sialagogue to treat xerostomia (dry mouth) in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), particularly those undergoing hemodialysis. The mechanism of action is attributed to the stimulation of salivary gland secretion and the presence of bioactive polyphenols and flavonoids that provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects to the oral mucosa. Clinical trials have focused on its efficacy in improving salivary flow rates and alleviating the discomfort associated with chronic thirst and dry mouth in the ESRD population.
