Overview

Chinese sumac extract is obtained from the fruit of *Rhus chinensis* (Chinese sumac), a plant long used in traditional Chinese medicine for gastrointestinal, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects. The extract contains high levels of polyphenols, flavonoids, tannins, essential oils, and various terpenoids. Mechanistically, research demonstrates antioxidant activity through activation of the Nrf2 pathway, enhancement of enzymes like heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and NAD(P)H quinone dehydrogenase 1 (NQO1), as well as inhibition of oxidative stress mediators (e.g., malondialdehyde), cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-6, and regulation of apoptosis-related proteins (Bcl-2/Bax/Caspase-3). The extract is used primarily as a dietary supplement or traditional remedy for prevention of gastric ulcers, hypertension, and inflammatory conditions and not as an approved pharmaceutical drug[3][5][7].
