Overview
Chiniofon is an iodinated quinoline derivative that serves as a luminal amebicide and topical antiseptic. Historically used for the treatment of intestinal amebiasis caused by *Entamoeba histolytica*, it is typically formulated as a mixture of 7-iodo-8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonic acid and sodium bicarbonate. Beyond its anti-protozoal activity, chiniofon exhibits bacteriostatic properties and has been investigated for use in wound care, particularly for chronic venous ulcers and radiation damage. Studies have indicated that chiniofon does not inhibit fibroblast growth, a common side effect of other antiseptics like PVP-iodine, and may possess anti-inflammatory activity. Its systemic use has largely been superseded by more modern amebicides such as metronidazole.
