Chitin microparticles (CMP) are a novel intranasal immunotherapeutic agent developed by CMP Therapeutics Ltd for the treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis. Composed of small, purified particles of the natural polysaccharide chitin, CMP acts as a Th1-inducing adjuvant. Upon intranasal administration, these particles are phagocytosed by macrophages and dendritic cells in the nasal mucosa, where they trigger pattern recognition receptors including Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2), Dectin-1, and the mannose receptor. This activation leads to the secretion of Th1-polarizing cytokines such as IL-12 and IFN-gamma, which helps to rebalance the Th2-skewed immune response responsible for allergic symptoms, thereby reducing IgE levels and eosinophilic inflammation.
